1981 Ducati 900 Supersport
The 1981 Mike Hailwood Replica (MHR) Ducati 900 celebrates one of the most legendary comebacks in motorsport history. Created to honor Mike Hailwood’s historic 1978 victory at the Isle of Man TT after an 11-year absence, this 864cc bevel-drive L-twin was engineered for riders seeking pure race-bred performance and timeless aesthetic appeal.
This model remains one of the most iconic and visually striking motorcycles produced by the Borgo Panigale factory.
Historical Significance & Evolution
The Hailwood Legacy: Launched in late 1979 and refined for 1981, the MHR was directly inspired by the sports motorcycle Hailwood rode to victory on the mountain course.
Design Transformation: The 1981 production version brought practical updates over early models, including a split fairing for easier maintenance access and, later in the run, a shift from the beautiful but restrictive fiberglass fuel tank to a steel tank to satisfy evolving road safety regulations.
The Bevel-Drive Twilight: The 1981 model represents the classic era of Ducati's complex bevel-gear driven camshaft engines, a mechanical signature that would eventually give way to belt-driven desmodromic designs.
